Gymnema sylvestre, commonly known as Gymnema or “Gurmar” (meaning “sugar destroyer” in Hindi), is a woody climbing shrub native to India, Africa, and Australia. It has been used for centuries in traditional Ayurvedic medicine, primarily for its antidiabetic properties. The plant contains active compounds such as gymnemic acids, which are known to suppress the ability to taste sweetness and help regulate blood sugar levels. It also contains other beneficial constituents like gurmarin, saponins, flavones, and anthraquinones, which contribute to its therapeutic effects¹. Gymnema works by reducing the absorption of sugar in the intestines, stimulating insulin production, and potentially regenerating pancreatic beta cells². Beyond its role in managing diabetes, Gymnema has also shown promise in supporting weight loss, reducing sugar cravings, and improving lipid profiles by lowering LDL cholesterol and triglycerides while increasing HDL cholesterol.
