Cod Liver Oil

Overview

Cod liver oil is extracted from fresh livers of Atlantic cod and other species of the family Gadidae. It is an excellent source of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), vitamin A and vitamin D.

Historically, it was given to children because vitamin D had been showed to prevent rickets, a condition that affects bone development in children.¹

Key indications

Upper respiratory tract health

Study has shown that supplementing 600 to 700IU of vitamin D and 3500IU of vitamin A, given as cod liver oil and multivitamin in children significant decreased in the mean number of paediatric visits for upper respiratory tract infection.¹

Skin health

Cod liver oil is rich in vitamin D that plays an important role in promoting the scaffolding and supporting the underlying skin and maintaining the integrity of facial bones. Studies have shown that a deficiency in vitamin D may lead to demineralisation of gingival bone, leading to the formation of wrinkles around the mouth and inward turning of the lips.²

Multiple sclerosis

Low vitamin D levels have been associated with an increased risk of multiple sclerosis. Study shown that supplementing vitamin D through cod liver oil during adolescence was associated with a reduced risk of multiple sclerosis.³

Gestational diabetes mellitus

A double-blind randomised controlled trial has shown that supplementing 75mg/mL of EPA and 150mg/mL of DHA through cod liver oil effectively has reduced the levels of blood glucose, lipid levels, hs-CRP, and HOMA-IR and the incidence of perinatal complication.⁴

Rheumatoid arthritis

A pilot study has shown that supplementing 1g of cod liver oil daily for 3 months effectively reduced the symptoms of morning stiffness, painful and swollen joint and pain intensity of patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Cod liver oil is rich in DHA and EPA with anti-inflammatory properties and the integration of these two omega-3 fatty acids into the chondrocyte membranes of joint cartilage helps to increase the production of the inflammatory mediator leukotriene B₄.⁶

Adverse effects⁵

  • Cod liver oil is generally well tolerated
  •

  • Most common adverse effects are flatulence, gastrointestinal upset, heartburn, and nausea
  • Dosage range

Adult – Cod liver oil is most often used in doses of 15-20mL daily for up to 4 months.

Children – Cod liver oil is most often used in doses of 5mL for up to 5 months.

    Contraindications/cautions⁵

  • Potential drug interaction as below:
  •

    Anticoagulant drug
May increase the risk of bleeding

    Antidiabetic drug
May increase the risk of hypoglycaemia
