Selenium is an essential trace element which acts as an important component of antioxidant enzymes such as glutathione peroxidase (GPx) in human. GPx is a key antioxidant in defense against oxidative stress initiated by excess reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS). The antioxidative protective system of GPx depends heavily on the presence of selenium in which each GPx molecule contains four selenium atom. Selenium increases the level and activity of GPx.
